Preparing for your first campervan trip
Your first campervan trip can feel overwhelming β there is so much to remember, so many things that could go wrong. But here is the truth: thousands of first-timers hit the road every week and have the time of their lives. The key is not to pack everything imaginable, but to have the essentials covered and embrace the adventure.
Start with documents. This seems obvious, but in the excitement of packing, people forget driving licences at home more often than you would think. Keep all documents in one dedicated folder: driving licence, vehicle registration, insurance papers, rental contract, and passports if crossing borders. The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) is often overlooked but essential for emergency medical care abroad.
For clothing, think layers rather than outfits. Weather in a campervan changes constantly β you might start the morning in mountain fog and end the day on a sunny beach. A waterproof jacket, warm fleece, comfortable walking shoes, and sandals for campsites cover most situations. Pack less than you think you need β laundromats exist, and you can always buy a cheap t-shirt on the road.
Electronics deserve special attention. Bring a power bank for phones (camp showers and town visits take you away from the campervan charger), a USB-C cable for fast charging, and any adapters you need. If you plan to work remotely, bring your laptop charger, a portable USB-C monitor if you use dual screens, and noise-cancelling headphones for video calls in busy campsites.
The pre-departure vehicle check is crucial. Even if the rental company does this, run through the basics yourself: check tyre pressure (including the spare), verify all lights work, locate the jack and wheel wrench, know where the water fill and waste drain are, and understand how to operate the gas system for cooking. Most importantly, know where the fuse box is β a blown fuse is the most common "malfunction" in campervans and takes 10 seconds to fix if you know the location.
If you are travelling with a dog, do not forget their essentials: food (enough for the entire trip plus a day extra), collapsible bowls, a long leash for campsite use, their health booklet with vaccination records, and any medications. Most campsites in Poland are dog-friendly, but always check policies before arriving.
Campervan packing -- FAQ
- What is the most important thing to bring on a first campervan trip?
- The absolute minimum includes: documents (driving licence, vehicle registration, insurance, rental contract), basic first aid kit, warning triangle, reflective vest, phone charger, hygiene products, and clothing for varying weather. Everything else can be bought along the way, but these items are essential from day one.
- Does the rental company provide kitchen equipment?
- Most rental companies (including Nomad Camper) provide basic kitchen equipment: pots, frying pan, cutlery, plates, cups, bottle opener, and chopping board. It is worth bringing your own spices, oil, tea/coffee, and favourite mugs. Check the exact equipment list with your rental company before departure.
- How much luggage fits in a campervan?
- A campervan (e.g., our MAN TGE) typically has several storage compartments, a lower garage, and space above the cab. General rule: pack as if going on a trip with one large backpack per person + a food bag. Avoid hard suitcases β soft bags and duffels fit better into the irregular storage spaces. Less is more in a campervan.
- Do I need to bring my own bedding and towels?
- It depends on the rental. Nomad Camper provides a full set of bedding and towels included in the rental price. Many rentals offer bedding for an extra fee (50-100 PLN) or require you to bring your own. Always check this when booking to avoid surprises on-site.
